My 1957 L6-226 Wagon Build.

The seats are finished! I will pick them up early next week. Here are some photos the shop texted me. Nothing fancy in my cars.

Nice! Will the interior be the color of the seat frames?

It will be a saddle brown color, I did the seat frame in light sand to act as a accent color. The interior will be a tri-tone of browns, the seat brown, the sand color seat frames and the saddle brown metal. I figure the wood slats will be close to the seat brown.

Superbowl Sunday update.

Today was a long day and the torch was running a bit hot - more on that as we go.

So today I would start working on the rear fenders - primarily the passenger side today. It had a few holes and the signs of more





But before I did any work there I wanted to get the sideboards out of the interior to reduce the flammable objects near the work area. While I was at it I also remove the window trim.



Only one mouse nest but otherwise ok inside.

With the inside clear I move to the fender/wheel well. I started by power brushing the paint and surface rust off.





Then I cut out the bad stuff.

! Parents !- have you children leave the room.





Then I started patching and got up to leading.



I was putting on too much heat so it wasn't going well. I was a little put off at a few hours in and finally "cooled down".

I got bit more done and called it a day.



The gas tanks has been dry for years by the way...

More next week.

Looking like progress to me. Now you see why so many of these old girls have Sawzall hacked fenders. Repairs are time consuming.

Hopefully this fender will be done next week and I will start the other. My goal is looking at least 90% like new.

Last night I couldn't sleep so I decided to lead my rear fender. This time I worked it slowly with a more on/off heat approach. This worked well and I got a lot filled.



The main lesson has been learned as I need to patch smarter with steel and only use lead in a small way. So I purchased a flanging tool for the rest of the patches. I will give it a try later today on my second shift of Willys work.

Time for the second shift update. After some successful work last night/early this morning I was ready to get back over to the barn and finish up the passenger side rear wheel well.

When I say ready I mean tired but ready to finish that side.



First I had to patch a line of holes hidden in the photo above. I used a pneumatic flanging tool from Harbor Freight and made a patch. It is pretty slick, sorry I didn't take any photos. I will make up for it on the driver's side rear. I got the patch in ground down and leaded. I also patched some small holes on the back of the fender well.

The lincoln wire welder I have while not being the fancy gas type does have many big advantages. At low amperage settings You can slightly vary heat by moving the gun further from the work surface. It makes filling holes pretty easy.







With everything leaded it was time to file fown the tough parts and smooth it out. Currently I am getting the leaded spots close but not final. I will weight until they are all 90% done then buy the right file to finish them.

After some wire wheeling I added some primer to I could really see what the surface looks like.





After that I needed to check out my carb. It has been flooding the engine so I figured I would strip it down and check everything again.



I ran out of steam after blowing it all out so next time I will reassemble it and test it out.

1300$ including spring repair in a few seat cushions.

Here is the update for this past weekend. I received a nice rebuild kit from Mike's carb parts and proceeded to rebuild the carb (again) and follow the setup instructions with the Mike's kit. I reassembled it to the engine and everything is good now.

That is also what it looked like when I started Sunday morning.

Next I worked on moving the Wagon forward a few feet in the barn to make access to the drivers rear wheel well easier.

Enter the 1947 John Deere.


Why push the thing when you can start and warm up an old tractor and then spend 15 minutes driving said tractor to get the chain from the other barn!

Once the Wagon was moved I started the cutting......

!Again parents have your kids leave the room.!









After that I tried my new to me leading file.

So today is a short update. I was sick last weekend and didn't do anything in the barn. This weekend I decided to paint the floor of the cab. First I steel brushed the entire floor and vacuumed out all the junk.



The I started to apply the paint. Since the floor was covered in primer or paint I just applied my coat to the floor.



Then I taped off some of the stuff up front and finished it up.



It already feels much better which is why I did this. Kind of like a morale booster. Next week I will finish the driver's side rear wheel arch.

I also painted the window trim but forgot to take pictures. More to come in the coming weeks.

Sunday spring forward update:

So last time I worked on the body I cut out the last section of cancer over the rear driver side wheel well. Today I was going to patch it up.

Here is what we started with:



I started off by power sanding around the cuts and then trimming out the first patch and then quickly the second.



To make my patches I normally trace the holes to get an approximate side. With my dirty work gloves and a white piece of paper I make a rubbing.





Then I cut out the template and fit it to metal.



Blury picture apologies. Somebody adjust the rabbit ears.

Then transpose:



Then trim



Then test fit and trim some more:



Then weld it in.



With the finess of the welding wire and a bit of luck it all goes in with a bit of grinding.



Next time I will clean it all up and lead fill it in to smooth it all out.

I will be in Japan for work however so next time is a about a month away.

I finished up the day by starting to remove the rear bumper and brackets. One of the carriage bolts needs to be cuts so that is for next time.

Howdy Fellers, I am back from the land of the rising sun and will be working on the Wagon this weekend. In the meantime here is an AM transmitter I put together from a kit for ipod playback on my wagon's am radio.



It is almost finished. I just have to build the stereo to mono converter/amplifier so that I can get the most out of my single speaker playback. Those parts should arrive later this coming week.

Until then the final body leading work starts Sunday. Onve the leading is complete it is time to start masking and sanding for paint......
