Finally got some time and finished bracing and welding the front cross member in. Got my sleeves through the frame for the relocated steering box. If I had bought long enough bolts I could have mocked up the box....story of this build :D. I dropped off my "new" steering box at my buddy's shop to toss in the wash for an upcoming rebuild and tapping it for hydro-assist steering.

Finally got my 2WD steering box and the rebuild kit from West Texas Off Road (awesome company by the way!). I also ordered what I needed to tap the box for hydraulic assist steering. I mounted the box to determine what length spacers I need to cut and see how I came out on my angle. The factory angle was 25 degrees, and I came out at 26. I think I'm good where I'm at with it. Should be very superior over the stock front setup with the plating and a beefier cross member.

Have you ever rebuilt a Saginaw steering box? It's on my list. Watched on youtube. It doesn't seem like rocket science. Any tips you learn or know would be great.

I've never done it either. Printed out a how-to that's 39 pages long and looks very extensive. I'll watch a few videos too but I'm not scared.

My neighbor used to be a GM line mechanic, he says it's not too complicated. Looking forward to your update.

Most everything people are "scared" of just requires more pre-planning and research, it isn't usually difficult. My brother inlaw just tried rebuilding a Saginaw off of videos alone and it didn't work well.

I was able to get my steering box stripped down last night. I'll be dropping it off at my friends shop to get a nice warm bath...YUCK! Lots of sludge built up inside and it stinks like burnt fluid. The good news is that both the '87 Suburban box and the unknown 70's(?) Chevy box had the same type of sector shaft so I was able to swap them and I will have a spare box. Interesting little buggers, it feels like you're taking apart a flux capacitor or a spaceship ;) . Reassembly should happen here this weekend.

Mic the ball bearings that came out, some boxes have different size bearings (can be less than a thousandth inch difference) and if you don't put them in the proper order going back together, the box won't work... I know the dodge boxes I use on cherokees are that way, don't know about chevys...

Thank you, I'll check them! The only thing I found regarding that was actually color. If they were all the same, it didn't matter. If they were different color you alternate them.

Ditto what Dual48s said. I have notes in an old GM truck manual written by my dad some time in the 1980's. Whatever box he was doing (most likely mom's 1970 station wagon or his 72 suburban) had an odd number of bearings, larger diameter one went in first and last.

Thank you both for the input. However, I did watch a video on Youtube so I kinda know what I'm doing. HAHAHAHA

Then you truly are the master!

I'll step out of the way so you can keep submitting all the awesome posts and pictures!

HA!! I need all the help I can get. I greatly appreciate any input, especially from people who have done this before because I never have. I pretty much dove into the deep end for my first build ever.

Well, almost got it totally put back together. I just have to wait for a friend to get back from Moab for some help. He has the tap I need for my other hydro-fitting in the top if the sector cap. Overall, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. No pictures really because it was slimy and boring. The little bearings took me a minute to figure out exactly how they stacked in their. I never realized they were contained in such a small area. I won't know for awhile, but I really hope it works.....it should. Sorry for the crappy phone pics. My iphone doesn't like the lighting in my garage.

Diy4X Hyrdo-steer end cap. Perfect way to not drill the box itself. This way if you replace the box you only need to swap the end cap and the sector cap to keep hydraulic assist steering. Much easier.

Bill, any updated pics on your cab and have you decided how to seal up the new size glass for the sides ?

Bruce,
Nothing going on with the cab right now, but soon. I'll be putting the cab on the frame here soon. I haven't thought much about the window seals yet as I'm quite a ways out on that stuff. I'd love to hear any suggestions you or anyone else might have?
