Sparky's '56 Wagon Build

Only 4 more months, that is exciting on both fronts. I'm still feeling optimistic about having the body swap done in time. I hope you do make it by it will be good to see you guys again. I still have that lower tailgate waiting for you.

Joseph will be happy to hear you still have the tailgate... Someone ran into the back of his wagon a couple of days ago and put a nice dent into his current tail gate. The new dent is right above the 50 pound lead and bondo repair that was done decades ago... I think it's time to replace it.

Pete, will Joseph be keeping or selling his tailgate when it's replaced?

Im pretty sure I have these templates still. They are super brite with a regular bulb. I can dig them out and send them if you like.

The push to get the body swap completed before Moab is still in full effect. The door fitment and upgrades are finally done and I was able to start picking away at the long list of to-do's.

I should have my air compressor hooked up this week so I can do all of the finish sanding and prep for paint.

Installed a cable column shifter from Ididit. I had to make some changes to it but it shifts nice and smooth.

Continuing on with the body I installed all of the interior lighting. Since I bought Joseph's LED tail lights a while back I decided that all of the lights need to be LED to continue the look. This is an OEM looking LED dome light that fit into the factory mount.

These will be the underdash lights that will come on with the dome lights.

These are the last of the interior lights. These are mounted to the bottom of the door and will work with the dome light. It will be nice to see what you are stepping out on to in the dark. I still thinking that I may make a dimple die to recess or protect these.

I have a couple of items to finish on the dash one being installing a USB port on the dash. I always have my GoPro stuck to my dash and I thought it would be nice to have a power port near it and one less wire hanging.

The day has finally came to get the new body painted. Now I had a hard decision to make with it being so close to the Willys Rally in Moab. Do I tempt fate and tear down my running and driving Wagon for the sheet metal parts that need to be painted or do I take my Wagon the way it is. All those around me said that I need to go for it. So I did, I tore my Wagon apart with two months til Moab. What was I thinking?! I decided that I was going to paint it myself so I went and sent parts out for media blasting, rented a paint booth, bought all of the paint, primer, sealer etc., lined up a trailer and then we sanded for hours. Paint day arrives, everything is loaded up and my dad even flew in to help with the paint. On my way to the booth I call to let them know I'm on my way and that's when I started to panic. They told my sorry that we didn't call and tell you that the booth was broke and wouldn't be fixed for two to three weeks. I didn't have a backup plan nor do I have anymore time to take off to paint it myself.

I called anyone and everyone to see if they knew of a good and speedy painter. The answer always came back no. For more than a week I searched and the problem that I kept getting was no one wanted to shoot a satin paint or they couldn't complete it in my time frame. Then I got lucky, I stumbled into a painter that I knew of who has a great reputation and he said he can get it done in my time frame. So I loaded it back up onto the trailer to haul it to his shop. I dropped it off at 10 this morning and by mid afternoon it was masked and rolling into the paint booth for it's first coat of paint, primer coat.

My list of to-do's before Moab is everything, if I get it back in time. I have my fingers crossed that he lives up to his word and reputation.

Yikers Sparky!! I thought I was running out of time on Floyd's One Ton Axle Project on Floyd to get him ready for Moab! My Son in Law and I have been working Over Time on Floyd and all the "Big Stuff" is almost done. Then all we have left to do is the 500 "Little Things" to do!! When is the cutoff in getting OWF Tickets? Good Luck and take a few extra days off real work and work instead on your Wagon! Hope to see you in Moab! John (AKA: Pivnic)

Great thinking on the interior lighting Scotty! I am trying to replace the dome light on my 1960 wagon and the one you are using looks like a perfect way to go. I know your busy, but when you get some time could you tell me were you bought the dome light? Glad you got your rig going at the painters. Paint jail can be brutal! Thanks and good luck, Mike.

I'm in the process of a rewire and I'm planning on following Scotty's ideas and adding some under dash and under door lighting. A cool way to keep the original look yet adding a modern flair.

Mike, thanks for the well wishes. I bought my LED dome light from SuperBrightLEDs.com. There are a lot of options out there but this is the one that I thought looked closest to factory. Here is the link https://www.superbrightleds.com/mor...ure-w-10-high-flux-leds-w-chrome-housing/744/

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. Today was a good day. Bright and early this morning I get a call from my painter and he said that by the end of today my Willys would finished and ready for pickup tomorrow. I couldn't believe my ears. They got it done in 4 days?! What happened to 2 or 3 weeks. This was great news. He said that there was such little bodywork to do that he pushed it up to the front of the line. I couldn't quit thinking about it all day, what did it look like, how did the satin sheen turn out, did the satin sheen change the overall look of the color? On and on my brain was spinning. The color is 2017 Toyota Quicksand with a satin sheen (not flat just low gloss). It's not everyone thing but I think that it will look good when its all assembled and it sure will be different. I like the color even better in the daylight.

Time to bring it home and get to work.

Looks great, Steve. Satin colors seems to fit a Willys. I've been thinking satin gray metallic for mine when I get there. Can't wait to see it put together.

Awesome Steve, can't wait to see the finished product in Moab!

Pete
