Budget bastard pickup build.

We bought a house a couple of weeks ago that needs "some" attention before we can move in, so I haven't had time to work on the Willys lately.

But here is a little bit of this Willy`s history in my family:
My mothers side of the family was heavily into Willys/Jeeps/AMC/Rambler`s in the 70`s and 80´s.
My grandfather always had a Willys MB or two and my father used to borrow one of them when the family went offroading, but my father always wanted to own his own Willys.
In 1981 the fire department in a small industrial town was phasing out the Willys trucks in favor of larger and more modern trucks and my father bought this Willys.
My father and uncle actually drove my uncle´s Willys wagon to pick it up.
The Willys were stripped of the water tank and other firetruck parts and my father fitted seats in the rear so the whole family could enjoy it. It was used as a daily driver for a little more than a year before my father sold it to buy a more modern daily driver.
The other car he owned at the time was a nice 1965 Rambler American 2dht, so I understand now why he sold it, but I sure didn't understand it at the time. I can recall being VERY disappointed...

The new owner painted it black and yellow and used it to haul his drag race motorcycle for a while before we lost track of it.
Three years ago my uncle "found" it again in an for sale ad on the internet, he called, told the owner he wanted it and the rest is history. The Willys is back in the family and I will NEVER let it go again! :D
Apparantly there have been 10 different owners between 1982 and the previous owner who bought it in the early 90`s and converted it to a pickup.

Very cool History Joakim...

Hi Joakim. Glad you were able to track your family's Old Willys Wagon down and buy it back! Good luck with your new house and your 'new' Wagon. Post pics of it as you progress with your Willys Project. Pivnic

Thank You! We will be moving to our new house the week before Christmas so hopefully I`ll have some time to tinker with the Willys in january.:)

Nice to have history like that. Pity really that it was converted to a pickup.
Yeah the history is great for sure. When it comes to the conversion I`m kind of torn, it would have been practical to have the firetruck rear body so I could have taken the family 4 wheeling but I´ve always loved how the Willys pickup´s look.... Besides my Willys have never been a true wagon, it started life as a cab over chassis so the frame is pickup.:)

My daughter approved my new tires,
my son thought it was monster truck wheels:)

38.5x11-16 SS boggers (will only be used off road)
I think it will clear with a 4" lift and some creativity..:p
The ford top loader transmission will get a t176 shifter top when I have the time. It looks better to have the shifter in the stock location vs the 4" offset external hurst shifter.

Very interesting truck with a cool history! So a T176 top cover will work on the top loader 4 speed? When I had a T176 in my CJ5 we had to shift it nice and easy or the tabs on the retainer would bend and the shifter would come out in your hand!

The T176 top cover bolt pattern is the same as the toploader , some minor grinding is needed to make room for the shifter forks. Yeah, I've heard stories of the shifter popping out of the shifter tower.... Maybe there is a way to reinforce the tabs?

Just finished mocking up front axle location. It`s pushed 2" forward.
Front springs are two L.H.S 4" lift front springs from a Toy pickup mounted under the axle.
The toploader/T176 transmission is almost done, need to change input bearing and final assembly.

Looks good like that with the axle forward when you have such tall tyres. :)
Thanks! :) I think with 35"+ tires and moderate suspension lift you have to move the axle or modify the inner fenders for tire clearance..

Some pics of the top shift toploader conversion.

T176 case(top) has a notch on the lower right corner to clear the reverse shifter fork which the top loader case don't have.

A bit of grinding with a carbide bit and the T176 shifter fork clears the case.

A compact fairly strong transmission.:)

Finally!

LR4+toploader+D20

I have deleted VATS, rear O2 sensors, EGR, MAF, performed a segment swap from 4l80e to manual trans in the PCM and removed a bunch of wires from the engine harness. Hopefully the engine will start and run now...

Reinforced the firewall and converted to CJ7 hanging pedals and Wranger MC. A Saginaw PS steeringbox found its way to the framerail too.

Next thing to do is to make a new transmission crossmember. I want to have a flat skidplate under the frame, so I lifted the transfercase and dented the floor a bit. Might need a 1" body lift to get enough clearance betwen the floor and transfercase.

Towed the Willys home last night, it was an interesting experience with eggshaped, out of balance boggers!
